    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Walter J. Boardman (ASN: 67103), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 103d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Belleau Wood, France, 18 July 1918. Private First Class Boardman openly and fearlessly exposed himself to severe hostile fire and the fire of enemy snipers while rushing to capture an enemy ammunition carrier who was bringing up ammunition to one of the enemy’s machine-gun squads. Capturing the ammunition carrier, he threw many bombs into the machine-gun positions, killing or driving out the crews.
