    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Anthony C. Bills (ASN: 126780), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 7th Field Artillery, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cantigny, France, 28 – 29 May 1918. Corporal Bills voluntarily and constantly was exposed to shell fire to repair important telephone lines. During the performance of this work he lost an arm and was otherwise seriously injured.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Anthony C. Bills, United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Corporal Bills distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 7th Field Artillery, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action during the operations connected with the capture and defense of Cantigny, France, 27 to 31 May 1918. Corporal Bills constantly and voluntarily repaired telephone lines under heavy shell fire until his arm was shot off and he was otherwise severely wounded. [Anthony Bills was subsequently awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions during this same period.
