The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Thomas A. Berry (ASN: 2248629), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Vilcey, France, 12 September 1918. Private Berry was a member of a patrol, cleaning up a trench, when an enemy grenade was thrown into the midst of the group. With notable presence of mind and entire disregard for his own safety, Private Berry seized the grenade and threw it over the parapet, where it exploded an instant later, thereby saving the lives of his comrades.
