The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Stanley H. Berry (ASN: 306727), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery D, 76th Field Artillery, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Chateau-Thierry, France, July 14 – 15, 1918. During an intensive hostile bombardment, when all telephone lines had been cut off by shell fire, Private Berry voluntarily went out and continued to repair the forward lines until killed. His heroic conduct and self-sacrifice were an inspiration to all his comrades at a most trying time.
