The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant George Berkley (ASN: 736604), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 11th Infantry Regiment, 5th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, October 14 – 18, 1918. After all the officers of his company had been killed or wounded, Sergeant Berkley successfully led his men until compelled, through wounds, to leave the field.
