By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Theodore I. Berkeley, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 23 July 1918, near Mont St. Pere, while in an open field, which was being swept by heavy machinegun and rifle fire, Lieutenant Berkeley received orders from his battalion commander to retire to cover of woods, but seeing a wounded man farther to the front who was unable to craw, he disregarded personal danger and went forward and brought him to a place of safety. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]
