The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal John Nels Berg (ASN: 2472741), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Sommauthe, France, 4 November 1918. Corporal Berg led his squad under heavy machine-gun fire in an attack on a machine-gun nest, capturing two machine guns, killing the gunners, and driving off the remainder of the crews. With his squad he held the position for one hour, until the arrival of the rest of his company.
