The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private William Z. Bell (ASN: 1351191), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 168th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, east of Grand Pre, France, 15 October 1918. Private Bell, serving as stretcher bearer during two attacks, with exceptional bravery and disregard of danger exposed himself during an intense artillery bombardment to assist a wounded soldier in imminent need of first aid and was killed at his work by an enemy shell.
