By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Lewis C. Beebe (ASN: 0-6292), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Battle of the Marne, 15 July 1918, near Crezancy, France, Lieutenant Beebe, at the risk of his life rescued and conveyed a wounded private 300 yards through the terrible German preparation fire to the first aid station and then returned to his company through the same fire. During the same battle, 15 July 1918, near Crezancy, Lieutenant Beebe was on duty at the Regimental Post of Command as Intelligence Officer. The telephone lines having been cut by shell fire, Lieutenant Beebe volunteered to proceed to the Signal Corps switch board dug-out, about 150 yards distant, to maintain liaison and have the lines repaired if possible.
