War Department, General Orders No. 16 (1929)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Arthur J. Beattie, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 167th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Landres-et-St. Georges, France, 15 October 1918. Although sick, Lieutenant Beattie refused to relinquish his command and with utter disregard for his own personal danger led his platoon in the attack under heavy enemy machine-gun, artillery, and rifle fire, which resulted in the capture of the objective, thereby setting an example to his men of coolness, outstanding courage, and devotion to duty. During the performance of this brave act Lieutenant Beattie was struck by enemy shell fire and made the supreme sacrifice.
