    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harold W. Batchelder, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois d’Aigremont, France, 15 July 1918. When it seemed impossible for a runner to get through the violent barrage, Lieutenant Batchelder volunteered and carried an important message to regimental headquarters, returning with an answer.

While serving with the 3d Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Batchelder volunteered to go from 3d Battalion Post of Command to 30th Infantry Regiment Post of Command through heavy artillery fire, on 15 July 1918, near Bois d’Aigremont, France.
