The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Charles R. Barton (ASN: 69290), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 103d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Belleau Wood, France, 20 July 1918. Wounded in the leg by a machine-gun bullet, Sergeant Barton dressed his wound and continued to lead his section in a successful attack on two machine-gun nests. He remained on duty for 14 hours, until weakness forced him to be evacuated.
