The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Julius L. Barnes (ASN: 62418), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during action near Vaux, France, 15 July 1918. When two members of a small group were severely wounded during a counter-attack against the enemy, Private Barnes advanced twice across the open under machine-gun fire and brought each man back to cover.
