Barnes, Jr. (ASN: 1038254), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Barnes displayed exceptional heroism in the Marne Defensive, 16 July 1918. When several men of the section which he commanded had been wounded by enemy fire, he assisted several of them to the First Aid Station, although he was himself painfully wounded.
