The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Frank C. Barnes, Jr. (ASN: 1038254), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery B, 10th Field Artillery, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Champagne-Marne offensive, France, 16 July 1918. Sergeant Barnes, while in charge of a detached piece, by his bravery, courage, and devotion to duty greatly inspired his men at all times. When an enemy shell either killed or wounded his entire gun crew excepting one man, he, although painfully wounded, assisted the other wounded members of his crew to the first-aid station.
