The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Alfred M. Barlow, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Hearne, Belgium, 3 November 1918. Although suffering from a painful shrapnel wound in the leg, First Lieutenant Barlow led his company, with excellent leadership and command, over the river, and not until he had received wounds in both legs would he give his consent to be taken to a dressing station.
