The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Barney Bardman (ASN: 1704820), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Grand Pre, France, 15 October 1918. Private Bardman, acting as scout for his platoon, was attempting to effect a crossing over the river under heavy machine-gun and sniping fire. When he was struck by a bullet and mortally wounded he called out a warning to the other five members of the platoon to take cover, thereby saving many lives.
