The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John A. Bachman, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 308th Machine-Gun Battalion, 78th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Jaulny, France, 26 September 1918. During an early morning raid Lieutenant Bachman attempted to place two guns in position, when the enemy opened a terrific barrage. He was ordered to shelter on the hill, and, after his men had taken refuge there, he went back to determine whether or not all of his men had found shelter. In passing through the heavy barrage he was hit by a shell and instantly killed.
