The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Clarence Awbery (ASN: 731663), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 6th Infantry Regiment, 5th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fontaines, France, 7 November 1918. Private Awbery, accompanied by three other soldiers, volunteered and went out under heavy machine-gun and artillery fire to rescue a wounded comrade. Failing in the first attempt they again tried, and this time succeeded in bringing the wounded man to the shelter.
