The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Joseph D. Archer (ASN: 1781968), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 117th Ammunition Train, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Montfaucon, France, 11 October 1918. Private Archer, on duty at the ammunition dump of the 42d Division when it was violently bombarded by the enemy, volunteered to assist another soldier, who was wounded. He was killed shortly before reaching the dressing station.
