The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Clem Anthony (ASN: 281234), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 128th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Juvigny, north of Soissons, France, 30 August 1918. When a retirement had been ordered, Private Anthony was the last to leave his post, fearlessly exposing himself to fire from machine guns and snipers to bring in a wounded soldier, together with his automatic rifle and ammunition. Throughout the engagement his conduct under fire furnished an example of coolness and courage to his comrades.
