The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Fletcher D. Anderson (ASN: 935146), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 7th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, north of Cierges, France, 5 October 1918. While attending wounded under fire of artillery and machine guns, Private Anderson, although himself wounded, continued to render first aid to the wounded while subject to fire, until mortally wounded by machine-gun fire.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Fletcher D. Anderson (ASN: 935146), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the Medical Detachment, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Anderson was killed by a sniper while administering first aid to a wounded man in plain cite of the enemy at Cierges, France, on 5 October 1918, during the battle of the Meuse-Argonne. This was one of the many incidents that this man exposed himself to the enemy, without order from his commanding officers, to dress the wounded.
