The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Patrick Ames (ASN: 89024), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 165th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Landres-et-St. Georges, France, 14 – 17 October 1918. Under direct fire from enemy machine guns, Corporal Ames made four trips across open ground, carrying messages during the attack on Landres-et-St. Georges. On the night of 17 October Corporal Ames accompanied a patrol sent out to penetrate the enemy’s line and showed exceptional coolness in covering the retirement of the patrol under heavy shell and machine-gun fire. On the following night, being in charge of another similar patrol, Corporal Ames was mortally wounded, but he again displayed superior courage and leadership in withdrawing his men without further casualties.
