The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Edward Allen (ASN: 550550), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Moulin, France, 15 July 1918. At a critical time in the last German offensive, Sergeant Allen voluntarily made a reconnaissance of the enemy position at a time when his company was almost surrounded. He was mortally wounded as he returned to our lines, but lived to give information which was of vital importance in repelling the enemy attacks.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Edward Allen (ASN: 550550), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Allen displayed very extraordinary heroism 15 – 18 July 1918, near Moulins, France. While his company was counterattacking they were held up and forced to entrench. Information of the enemy was very indefinite. Sergeant Allen thereupon volunteered to patrol the front alone with the view of locating the enemy and lost his life in the attempt. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]
