    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Samuel T. Adams, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 140th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Exermont, France, 29 September 1918. After all the other officers of his company had become casualties, Lieutenant Adams reorganized his company and led it brilliantly in the assault on the town of Exermont. He was killed later during the consolidation of the new position.
