The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private James Ackley (ASN: 49505), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Chateau-Thierry, France, 6 June 1918. Even after he had been painfully wounded, Private Ackley remained on duty during the attack, performing his mission as runner, until ordered to the dressing station by his commanding officer.
