The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Hospital Apprentice First Class Gus L. Taylor, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism while serving as a Corpsman attached to the Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at the front in the battle of Bois de Belleau, France, 7 June 1918, in volunteering to go to the aid of two wounded men who were in front of our lines, and in bringing them to a place of safety, although himself wounded severely.

Taylor, United States Navy, is cited by the Commanding General, SECOND DIVISION A.E.F., for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Hospital Apprentice First Class Taylor distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving as a Corpsman attached to the Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action against the enemy in the Chateau-Thierry Sector, France, during World War I.
