The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade John J. Schieffelin, United States Navy (Reserve Force), for distinguished and heroic service as an aviator with the U.S. Naval Aviation Forces, Foreign Service, engaged in patrolling the waters of the War Zone, escorting and protecting troop and cargo ships, and operating against enemy submarines.
