Major (Infantry) Chambliss distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action in the Bois de Cunel, France, 8 October 1918, while directing his battalion in the attack on Madeline Farm.

Chambliss, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While Commanding the 2d Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in an attack on the Bois de Cunel, Major Chambliss personally led one company, all of whose officers were casualties, restoring confidence, and insuring the success of the whole operation. After organizing the newly-established line, he passed through heavy shell fire to report his dispositions and the location of the enemy.
