By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry) Ewing C. Colvin, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with 161st Infantry Regiment, 41st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and attached to Company I, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces as an observer, Captain Colvin did on the night of 14 – 15 July 1918, during terrific shell fire, voluntarily and at great risk of his life proceed from the Company Post of Command near Fossoy to the front line rendering valuable service of his coolness and conspicuous bravery. On 15 July he led a patrol into the area attacked by the enemy with the greatest ability, obtaining information of the enemy’s withdrawal.
