William Wright was a non-graduating member of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1886. He retired as a U.S. Army Lieutenant General in 1923.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Major General William Mason Wright, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. General Wright Commanded in turn the 35th Division, the 3d, 5th, and 7th Army Corps, under the 8th French Army in the Vosges Mountains, and later commanded the 89th Division in the St. Mihiel offensive and in the final operations on the Meuse River, where he proved himself to be an energetic and aggressive leader.
