The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel (Infantry) Dana T. Merrill, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Chief of Staff, 37th Division, during its organization, training and entire combat period, Colonel Merrill displayed unflagging energy and marked ability. To his zeal, initiative, and military attainments was due in great measure the success of the division in both the Meuse-Argonne and Ypres-Lys offensives.
