Ora Hunt graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1894. He retired as a U.S. Army Brigadier General. He authored and edited Volume 5 Photo History of the Civil War, and was the last surviving member of his class when he died in 1969.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Brigadier General Ora Elmer Hunt, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding General of the 6th Infantry Brigade, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, General Hunt distinguished himself and performed exceptionally meritorious service while in command of his Brigade in action from 3 October 1918 to 31 October 1918, in the Battle of the Argonne. His Brigade was exceedingly well handled and during the battle of the Argonne from about 15 October 1918 25 October 1918, although his Post of Command was constantly under shell fire and deluged with gas and his Brigade constantly engaged, he displayed high qualities of command in the taking of the Kremhilde Stellung system of trenches in his sector and excellent control of his Brigade at all times. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Brigadier General Hunt, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

As Commander of the 6th Infantry Brigade, 3d Division, during the greater part of its active operations, General Hunt achieved notable success, demonstrating high qualities of leadership. Through his exceptional tactical ability his brigade was enabled to overcome desperate hostile resistance during its participation in the Meuse-Argonne offensive. By his efforts he has contributed materially to the brilliant success of his brigade in that important operation.
