The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Brigadier General Sherwood Alfred Cheney, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Assistant Chief Engineer, General Headquarters, General Cheney rendered valuable services in the organization of the Engineer Corps and its coordination with the associated services. Later, as Director of the Army Transport Service, he performed eminently valuable services, achieving remarkable results in a task of great magnitude involving the expeditious return of many thousands of soldiers from the ports of France to the United States.
