The son of Civil War General and Medal of Honor Recipient Henry Alanson Barnum, Malvern Hill Barnum was named for Malvern Hill, where his father was shot in the hip and wounded. Malvern graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1886. Serving in Cuba in the Spanish-American War, he was himself shot in the hip during the battle of San Juan Hill. He served again in World War I, and retired as a U.S. Army Major General.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Brigadier General Malvern Hill Barnum, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. General Barnum commanded with marked success the 183d Infantry Brigade from its organization to the close of active operations. The conduct of his brigade in the St. Die and Marcache sectors was indicative of his good leadership. As a member of the Inter-Allied Armistice Board, he has performed his many exacting duties with marked ability, address, and sound judgment, rendering services of the highest character to the Government.
