The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Frederick A. Woodward (ASN: 152480), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery E, 42d Field Artillery, Coast Artillery Corps, near Suippes, Marne, France, July 14 – 15, 1918. Private Woodward, acting as runner during an engagement, kept up his work throughout the bombardment. On the trip he was wounded by a bursting shell, but succeeded in carrying a very important message to his battery commander.
