The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant William Jones (ASN: 1387679), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 131st Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bethincourt, France, 26 September 1918. Upon his own initiative Sergeant Jones advanced under concentrated rifle and machinegun fire, which was holding up his platoon, and put out of action a nest of light machine guns on the flank, thereby permitting the platoon to continue forward.
