The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Luther Calvin Griffith (ASN: 1320912), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bellicourt, France, 29 September 1918. When the other members of a Lewis gun crew had become casualties, Private Griffith operated the gun single-handed, and, attacking an enemy machine-gun emplacement, killed the gunner and made the other two members of the crew prisoners.
