The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Thomas F. Bailey (ASN: 2178317), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 354th Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Barricourt, France, 1 November 1918. Corporal Bailey, seeing that the advance of his platoon was stopped by machine-gun fire from the right front, took three men with him, and, with a rush in the face of a withering fire, charged the machine gun and captured it and the crew of five prisoners, thereby saving his platoon from the destructive fire of the gun and enabling it to immediately continue to advance.
