The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Gabriel Thornton Mackenzie, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 18th Infantry, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action during World War I. On his own initiative, Captain Mackenzie went into No Man’s Land to reconnoiter thereby discovering and bringing the body of a dead American Soldier and material discarded by the enemy.
