By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private William B. Byrd (ASN: 1322117), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private Byrd distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 115 Machine-Gun Battalion, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Vaux-Andigny and Molain, France, 10 to 11 October 1918. While acting as runner, Private Byrd crosses and re-crossed area swept by enemy artillery and machine gun fire, and established and maintained liaison between company headquarters and the various platoon headquarters.
