By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private First Class Cordell T. Morgan (ASN: 1384063), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private First Class Morgan distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 130th Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Marcheville, France, 10 November 1918. Private Morgan fired his automatic rifle until it became so hot it stuck, seized another gun from a wounded man, firing it until it jammed, salvaged a third gun, using this until it was shot out of his hands, when he drew his pistol and continued his advance with the remainder of his squad, one sergeant and four men, against a pill box occupied by two enemy machine guns. After killing the gun crews, Private Morgan’s squad was fired on by several machine guns from their left flank, the sergeant being severely wounded. Private Morgan, seeing his platoon commander wounded, attempted to rescue him and succeeded in reaching the wounded man, but was killed by a machine gun bullet and instantly killed.
