By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Lewis R. Cocreham (ASN: 2230438), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant Cocreham distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 360th Infantry Regiment, 90th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Villers-sur-Preny, France, 15 September 1918. Sergeant Cocreham led two patrols in attack on an enemy machine gun position under exceptionally dangerous circumstances, capturing one enemy machine gun and disabling its crew. He was severely wounded while leading his patrol against a second machine gun after another platoon in line had been driven off by its fire.
