War Department, General Orders No. 3 (1921)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Medical Corps) John C. Grabau, United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Captain (Medical Corps) Grabau distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 106th Field Artillery Regiment, 27th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Brabant, France, on 3 November 1918. At great personal risk Captain Grabau went to the assistance of a wounded soldier, and although twice knocked down by exploding shells, and being wounded in the arm, he continued his efforts until he ascertained that the soldier was dead. Later, at a dressing station, he refused to attend to his own wounds until he had dressed the wounds of three or four other men of his detachment.
