By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Charles Jan Miel (ASN: 108826), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Corporal Miel distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 101st Machine-Gun Battalion, 26th Division, in action in the Houppy Bois, north of Verdun, France, 26 October 1918, while delivering a message from company to battalion headquarters. Although his companion was mortally wounded by enemy artillery fire, Corporal Miel successfully accomplished the mission assigned to him.
