The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Brigadier General Joseph L. M. Andlauer, French Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. As Commander of the 18th French Division, General Andlauer displayed conspicuous military attainments and the most loyal devotion to the allied cause. By his cordial spirit of cooperation and careful supervision of the training of the 1st, 2d, 26th, and 42d American Divisions during the time in which they were attached to his command, he rendered invaluable services to the American Expeditionary Forces.
