The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Sherburne Whipple, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Assistant Chief of Staff, G-1, of the 80th Division, from June until December 1918, Lieutenant Colonel Whipple performed his duties with marked ability in connection with the Service of Supply and Communications for his division. By his tireless energy, exceptional administrative ability, initiative, and sound judgment he successfully solved many perplexing problems, maintaining at all times an adequate supply of food and ammunition for the troops, thereby rendering valuable services to the American Expeditionary Forces.
