John Upham graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1903. He retired as a U.S. Army Colonel. His son, by the same name, graduated from the Academy with the Class of 1928, earning the Distinguished Service Cross in World War II.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) John S. Upham, Sr., United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I, as Assistant Chief of Staff, G-3, and Acting Chief of Staff, 36th Division, during the organization and training of the division in the United States and in France. In these positions of great responsibility Lieutenant Colonel Upham displayed sound judgment, high professional skill, executive and administrative ability, and devotion to duty, his services contributing greatly to the successes of the 36th Division in its operations with the American Expeditionary Forces.
