The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Major (Infantry) Paul Everton Peabody, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Assistant Chief of Staff, G-1, 1st Division, during the attack on Soissons, Major Peabody displayed marked ability. Later, as G-1, during the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives, by his extraordinary ability, his capacity for organization, and his brilliant execution of all details pertaining to administration of supply he overcame unusual difficulties and thereby contributed in a marked degree to the success of the operations of the 1st Division.
