The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Air Service) Charles Wesley Chapman, Jr., United States Army Air Service, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 94th Aero Squadron, 1st Pursuit Group, U.S. Army Air Service, A.E.F., on 3 May 1918, in the region of Autrepierre, France. While on patrol duty, Lieutenant Chapman courageously attacked a group of four monoplanes and one biplane and succeeded in bringing one down before he himself was shot down in flames.
